Dana Bay Lodge Canopies

We added entrance and patio canopies for a guest accommodation property in Dana Bay, just outside Mossel Bay. The work had to handle coastal wind, salt air and keep the front of house looking neat for arriving guests.

Dana Bay Lodge Canopies

A Guest Arrival Area That Needed Better Cover

The client was a small lodge in Dana Bay serving holiday guests and short-stay visitors. Their entrance steps and patio area were exposed to wind blown rain, morning dew and strong sun, which made check-in awkward and outdoor seating less useful.

The brief was straightforward but exacting. They wanted two canopies that looked clean from the street, shed water properly and matched the building without making it feel heavy. We also had to work around guest movement, limited storage on site and the fact that coastal fittings need more care than inland jobs.

  • Entrance canopy for cover at the front door and luggage drop-off point
  • Patio canopy for shade and light rain protection
  • Durable finish for salty air and coastal humidity
  • Drip control so water did not run back onto walkways

Site Measuring, Set-Out and Design Checks

We started with a site measure at Gouriqua Park and then checked the lodge openings on site in Dana Bay. The roof lines, wall heights and existing gutters all had to be measured carefully because the canopy brackets and flashings needed to sit true, not force the eye or interfere with windows and doors.

We confirmed the falls, fixing points and overhangs before fabrication. On this kind of work, a small error can lead to puddling or a canopy that looks out of square from the driveway. We also checked clearances for guests walking in with bags, and for staff moving in and out during peak times.

  • Measured wall to wall spans and projection depths
  • Marked fixing positions to suit existing structure
  • Checked rainwater paths and gutter tie-ins
  • Allowed for expansion and movement in summer heat

Fabricated for Coastal Conditions

We fabricated the canopy frames and sheet-metal details in our workshop in Mossel Bay. For a coastal property, the finish and the fastening method matter just as much as the visible shape. We used steel sections for the supporting frame and pre-formed sheet-metal components for the roofing and edge details.

The canopies were made to be practical for maintenance. That means clean lines, accessible fixing points and flashings that do not trap dirt or standing water. In Dana Bay, salt-laden air and strong wind can punish poorly detailed metalwork, so we kept the joints simple and the water run-off positive.

  • Steel frame members cut and assembled to suit each opening
  • Roof sheeting profiled for fast drainage
  • Custom flashings at wall junctions and edges
  • Fixings selected for exterior exposure

Installation Over Two Weeks Without Disrupting Guests

The job ran over two weeks from first measure to final handover. We scheduled the noisy work around guest movements and kept the site tidy each day so the lodge could continue operating. Where possible, we pre-fabricated components off site so the installation time at the property was kept short.

Our site supervisor coordinated the sequence with the lodge team, while the roofing and cladding installer handled the placement and sealing of the canopy sheets. The carpentry and masonry interfaces were checked as we went, because old walls are not always plumb and you cant assume a square face on a coastal building.

  • Week 1: measuring, fabrication and bracket preparation
  • Week 2: frame installation, sheet fitting and sealing
  • Final day: water checks, clean-up and handover
  • Minimal disruption to guests and staff routines

Drainage, Finish and Day-to-Day Use

The finished canopies now give the lodge better cover at the entrance and a more usable patio area. Rainwater is directed off the edges and into the existing drainage points, rather than onto the walking surface. That matters when you have guests carrying bags or stepping out of vehicles in wet weather.

The project also improved the look of the front of the property. The canopies sit neatly against the building, and the proportions suit the lodge rather than overpower it. The result is practical first, but it also helps the property present itself better to visitors arriving after dark or during summer wind.

  • Better shelter for guests at check-in
  • More usable patio space in sun and light rain
  • Cleaner water run-off at doorways and steps
  • Improved street view from the access road

What We Would Do Again on Similar Lodge Work

If we were doing the same job again, we would keep the same approach: measure carefully, fabricate locally and install quickly with good weather protection in mind. Guest accommodation sites benefit from work that is tidy, easy to maintain and matched to the building, not just whatever is quickest to put up.

For lodges and small hospitality properties in Mossel Bay, Hartenbos and Dana Bay, the main lessons are clear. Allow for wind uplift, avoid complicated water traps and do not leave the client with fittings that will need constant tightening. A neat canopy should protect the entrance without becoming a maintenance problem later.

  • Use simple fall lines for better drainage
  • Keep support details accessible for inspections
  • Choose fixings and flashings suited to coastal weather
  • Plan installation around occupancy and peak guest times

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What made this Dana Bay lodge job different from a normal carport?

The canopies had to suit a guest accommodation property, so appearance, quiet installation and water control mattered as much as strength. Coastal exposure also meant the detailing needed to cope with salt air and wind.

Did you fabricate the canopies locally?

Yes, the main steel and sheet-metal components were measured and fabricated in Mossel Bay, then installed on site in Dana Bay. That kept the fit accurate and reduced time on the property.

Can you do similar canopy work for other guest houses in the southern Cape?

Yes, we work across Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Great Brak River, George, Wilderness and Sedgefield. We handle site measuring, fabrication and installation for entrance covers, patio canopies and related steel work.
