Hartenbos Workshop Cladding

This Hartenbos workshop needed new wall cladding and matching flashings to tidy the building up and keep wind driven rain out. We handled the measuring, fabrication and installation for a small industrial client working in the southern Cape coastal belt.

Hartenbos Workshop Cladding

What the workshop needed

The client was running a small industrial workshop in Hartenbos and asked for a practical finish on the outside walls, with proper trim details around corners, openings and roof junctions. The building had to look neat, shed water properly, and stand up to the salt air that comes off the coast around Mossel Bay. It also had to be done with the least possible disruption to day to day work on site.

The brief was straightforward but the standards were not negotiable. The old external finish had uneven joins and a few weak points where rain could work its way in during those wet south easter days. We were asked to supply and install wall cladding and flashings that would suit an industrial structure, last well in coastal conditions and leave the workshop easier to maintain.

  • Small industrial workshop in Hartenbos
  • Coastal exposure with wind and salt air
  • Need for clean weatherproof wall detailing
  • Work had to stay within a short shutdown window

Measuring the site and planning the fix

We started with site measuring and a close check of the existing structure before any cutting or forming was done. On jobs like this, the first job is always to confirm the line of the frame, wall lengths, roof edges and any spots where the structure has moved over time. A small workshop may look simple from the outside, but if the wall line is out by only a few millimetres it shows in the cladding and flashings straight away.

Our operations team arranged the timing around the client's working hours so we could keep access clear and avoid unnecessary downtime. Hartenbos can see fast weather changes, so we planned for a dry install window and kept the components ready before site work began. That way the crew could move through the fix without stop start delays. The prep also allowed us to confirm fixing points and make allowance for thermal movement, which matters on steel sheeting in the sun.

  • Site measure taken before fabrication
  • Allowance made for movement and expansion
  • Installation planned around weather and access
  • Fixing lines checked against the existing steelwork

Cladding and flashings supplied

For the wall finish we supplied profiled sheet cladding cut to the measured lengths required on site. Each sheet was prepared to suit the building layout so there was no unnecessary trimming once the crew was working at the workshop. We also fabricated custom flashings for corners, openings and top edges, plus closure pieces where the wall sheets met the roof line. The aim was to keep the envelope tight and reduce any chance of wind driven rain pushing back under the edges.

The details matter on a building like this. A clean wall line is one thing, but if the flashings do not sit correctly the job will never look right or perform properly. We formed the trims to match the workshop profile, which gave the finished exterior a sharper edge and made future maintenance easier. In coastal areas, neat detailing also helps because water does not sit in awkward laps and that cuts down on early corrosion.

  • Profiled wall cladding cut to measured lengths
  • Custom corners and edge flashings
  • Closure pieces at roof to wall transitions
  • Sheeting selected for industrial use and coastal exposure

How the installation ran on site

Installation was carried out over two weeks, with the first week focused on prep, setting out and the main wall cladding run, then the second week used for flashings, final fixings and clean up. Our site supervisor kept the sequence tight so the cladding was fixed square and the trims landed where they should. The workshop foreman then handled the finishing work to make sure all sheet ends, laps and visible fixings were in the right place.

Because this was a live working workshop, we kept the site tidy and maintained clear walkways for the client's staff. We also had to work around the usual southern Cape conditions: morning moisture, wind off the bay and the odd interruption from load-shedding when power tools and lighting needed a plan B. The crew stayed organised and the work carried on without unnecessary hold ups. It was not a large building but it still needed proper coordination and a steady hand.

  • Two week programme from start to finish
  • Cladding fixed and aligned with full attention to line
  • Flashings installed after the main wall sheets
  • Site kept clean and workable for the client

Results for the workshop owner

The finished workshop now has a cleaner outside appearance and better protection against coastal weather. The cladding gives the building a more professional look, while the flashings close off the weak points that were causing concern before. That means less maintenance for the owner and a lower risk of water getting into wall edges and service openings during heavy rain.

From a practical point of view, the biggest gain was not just appearance but peace of mind. The workshop can keep operating without having to worry about every weather change, and the client now has a building that is easier to keep in order. The final result is neat, durable and suited to the way small industrial sites work in Hartenbos and the wider Mossel Bay area. The owner told us the job looked exactly as planned, which is always the point.

What we would do again on a similar job

If we were called back for a similar workshop in Hartenbos, or in places like Groot Brak, George or Wilderness, we would follow the same approach. Accurate measuring first, fabrication to suit the actual building, and installation in a set sequence so the sheets and flashings work together instead of fighting each other. That order saves time and avoids waste.

We would also keep the same focus on coastal detailing. In this region, a small shortcut today becomes a maintenance problem later, especially where salt moisture and strong wind get into open edges. For that reason, we prefer to make custom flashings rather than force a standard piece to fit. It takes a bit longer but it holds up better and looks cleaner on completion.

  • Measure first, fabricate once
  • Use custom trims where edges and openings need them
  • Allow for coastal moisture and wind exposure
  • Keep the site sequence simple and controlled

Local support for Mossel Bay and the southern Cape

J&E Sheet Metal is based in Gouriqua Park, Mossel Bay and works across the southern Cape on cladding, flashings, gutters, roof sheets, carports and steel structures. We have been trading since 2013 and the team handles workshop jobs, small industrial builds and maintenance work for clients who need practical steelwork done properly. Our office and workshop setup lets us respond to projects in Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Great Brak River, George, Wilderness and Sedgefield without dragging the job out.

For owners of workshops and service buildings, the main thing is getting the details right the first time. A good exterior finish should not need constant patching. It should keep water out, look tidy and suit the local climate. That is the kind of work we aim for on every job, whether it is a new build or a replacement on an older structure.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Do you handle site measuring before fabrication?

Yes. We measure on site first so the cladding and flashings fit the actual building, not just a drawing.

Can you work on workshops that are still operating?

Yes, in most cases. We plan the sequence to keep access clear and reduce disruption while the work is going on.

Do you cover areas outside Hartenbos?

Yes. We work across Mossel Bay, Great Brak River, George, Wilderness and Sedgefield, as well as nearby southern Cape towns.
